After studying fine art at Leeds College of Art and Royal College of Art Hilary studied in Paris with a scholarship from the French Government. She was awarded MBE 1992 for services to the Arts in Holloway Prison where she taught for almost 25 years. She was awarded Teacher of the Year for LONDON 2009.
